Valentin Rechitean

I create photographs as a way of facing the world as it is. I make pictures that call attention to things that other people might overlook. This exploration helps me engage more deeply with where I am in space and time. I make pictures to better understand my reality and interpret the world around me. Where Data Lives is an investigation into data centres that I chose to stylise in a sharp and clinical aesthetic. In Suburbia is an exploration of the bold, saturated tones in what many people see as a boring landscape.

In Suburbia

Suburban is regularly used as a dismissive rather than a descriptive term, especially by architects and planners. And yet, judging by the sheer number of people who move there, suburbia must be doing something right. The suburbs are an essential part of every city, quite often the most vigorous and innovative part.

I want to paint a vivid portrait of 21st-century living while thinking about the future of cities, towns, and the countryside.

Where The Data Lives

Data centres are centralized locations where computing and networking equipment is concentrated for the purpose of collecting, storing, and processing large amounts of data. Ireland is home to approximately 55 data centres with an additional 44 new centres under construction. EirGrid calculates that, by 2028, data centres will be consuming 29 per cent of Ireland’s electricity. With this project, I want to inform people of how their internet use affects the climate, the country, and themselves.
