I am a photographer who also makes short films. I'm interested in cinematography and in creating documentary treatments that deal with real life situations. I recreate these situations in dramatised and fictional scenes to visually engage the viewer. The central themes to my practice are race, culture, youth and identity.
OUT OF SYNC
This project is about youth and identity, focusing specifically on young girls in their early teens and the struggles that they face when they are longer kids, but not yet adults. Themes of friendship, cyber-addiction and sexuality are uppermost for young women at this age. They are trying to find themselves and establish their identities, while still struggling with the cultural norms imposed on them to fit in and not be considered social outcasts.
Exist Loudly
This project is based on my friend's life and self identity. The photographs portray her as a young hard working mum, as well as a strong individual who enjoys life to the fullest while balancing her many responsibilities. Although she is continuing her Masters Degree in Pharmaceutical Science as well as working part time, I decided to focus on just two aspects of her life to show the complexity of identity and how we can be represented. The images show the contrasts in her life; as a mum to her beautiful little girl and as a friend who shows her young playful side when she is out giving herself a break.
