Kate Molloy
My influences for this project began with Andy Billman’s Daylight Robbery and his work about boarded-up buildings in the UK. This project in particular got me looking into the same issue in Dublin. Another influence was simply me going in and out of town on public transport and passing by apartment blocks that were derelict and hadn’t been used in years, while at the same time, I have been hearing about the housing crisis and homelessness issue while these buildings are wasting away by not being used. Another influence of this project was Martha Rosler’s The Bowery and her use of text. The Bowery is a critique of the style of documentary photography, and the way the government tackles issues like homelessness. My project wants to do something similar, by using text and images to bring to light the growing issue of dereliction and the government's lack of assistance.
The Promised
The Promised captures the stark reality of derelict buildings, once vibrant but now forgotten, standing as witnesses to the housing challenges plaguing Dublin. Each photograph serves as a visual testament to the urgency of addressing the housing crisis, highlighting the number of empty buildings lying derelict and abandoned while hundreds of people sleep in the streets. By showcasing the sheer volume of abandoned buildings against the backdrop of a city in need, my project aims to provoke contemplation and inspire action towards sustainable solutions.
