Mary Furlong

Mary Furlong is an Irish visual artist specialising in photography. From Dublin, she currently lives in Meath. Mary is interested in stories, personal histories, local places and their hidden histories, the commonplace and the generally overlooked. She is inspired by what she finds around her: everyday objects and situations, chance remarks, snippets, and stories. She looks for what she thinks is extraordinary in the everyday. While photography forms the main part of her practice, Mary has started to incorporate text and, more recently, to experiment with audio and video. She also works collaboratively within communities.

Not the location of my first kiss

Not the location of my first kiss is about memories, sometimes misremembering, and mixing things up. I concentrated on memories from the years before my first misremembered kiss, and as the project is centred around childhood memories I wanted it to have a playful element. The still life images were made at home in the spare bedroom. As I currently live in the same town I spent most of my childhood in, I had some form of access to locations. To date my portraiture has been very straight, I wanted these portraits to have a performative element, my Mum stood in for everyone. Everything starts with a memory, from that a photograph is made and a piece of text written.
